To obtain or renew an ID card, you must come in person, with the proper documents and fee. The fee is $15.00 in cash except for those ages 65 and older, the fee is $10.00 in cash.

All changes in status or name due to marriage, divorce, annulment, adoption, or citizenship must be supported by legal, certified documents. Copied, altered, or illegible documents are not acceptable. Proof of Hawaii address may be required.

Effective July 1, 2009, Act 19, SLH 2009, provides that the expiration date will be 8 years from the cardholder's birthday. Cards for Non-United States citizens expire on their I-94 departure date.

      Office hours, location and disabled access

      The Oahu State ID office is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, except State holidays and furlough days.

      We are busiest at the following times:

      • When school is not in session. This includes fall and winter intersession, spring break, summer vacation, and all non-State holidays and waiver days that are observed by schools.
      • Mondays and Fridays, especially when it falls before or after a holiday.

      We are located at 465 South King Street at the corner of Punchbowl Street in Room 102.

      Disabled access: There is a ramp in the front of the building. Those requiring assistance at the State ID office should complete an application form and proceed to Window 5.

      Required Documents

      Required documents are listed on the State ID application form.

      Complete U.S. Passport supplemental form if presenting a U.S. Passport for documentation.

      Forms may be printed or filled in and printed with data. To view, fill in, or print forms, you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

      Renewals

      Renewal by mail is available for persons ages 65 and older who obtained an ID card after November 1, 1998, if there is no change in name and citizenship. Please call 587-3112 to verify that you are eligible for renewal by mail.

      If you are a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien and have your current ID card with NO CHANGE in name and citizenship, complete an application form. No other documents are required.

      All others must bring in their current passport with a valid I-94 card, Form I-20, or Form IAP because ID cards for these individuals will expire on the stated departure date from the United States.

      U.S. Citizens

      U.S. Citizens must present an original Social Security card. In addition, you must present one of the following:

      1. A certified birth certificate issued by the state repository in the state where you were born;

                                OR
      2. A certificate of citizenship or naturalization;

                                OR
      3. A document for a child born abroad of American parents.;

                                OR
      4. A valid United States Passport if issued in your legal name.

      Complete U.S. Passport Supplemental Form if presenting a U.S. Passport for documentation.

      U.S. Nationals

      U.S. Nationals are those individuals who were born in American Samoa. U.S. Nationals must present an original Social Security card.

      In addition, you must present a birth certificate with a certificate of identity.


      Non-U.S. Citizens

      Non-U.S. Citizens who are eligible to obtain a Social Security Number, must present an original Social Security card. In addition, you must present one of the following as applicable:

      1. Alien resident card;

                                 OR
      2. Valid foreign passport with valid visa;

                                 OR
      3. I-94 card - Refugee.

      Foreign students must also present Form I-20 or Form DS-2019, or a letter from INS with an interview date for Form I-485.

      Persons Under 14

      The application form for persons under 14 must have a parent's or guardian's signature.

      Proof of guardianship is required.

      Outreach Programs

      In order to provide improved service to the public, we will be taking the State ID program directly into the community on the following Saturdays from 8:30am to 2pm:

      Please check the website for the latest information on future community events. The State ID telephone recording at 587-3111 will also be updated with the latest information. Cards will be mailed to you 5-10 working days after the Outreach event.

      Hawaii State ID Card Express:

      The public can complete an application for a State ID card on-line at http://stateid.ehawaii.gov and pay the $13 (age 65 or older) or $18 fee via credit card. If you select to be processed at the Main State ID Office on Oahu, go directly to the web application express workstation to capture your photograph, signature, and fingerprints. Your ID card will then be generated for you. Please bring your printed confirmation page showing the confirmation number and your required documents.

      You may select an Outreach location as your designated site to process your application. Applications must be submitted by 2pm the day before the Outreach date to be processed on that date. Everything above applies to an Outreach event, except that the cards will be mailed to 5-10 working days after the Outreach event. If you miss your designated Outreach location, your confirmation number is still valid at any other Outreach event or at our main office in Oahu.

      You have one year from the date of your web application to process your State ID card at any of our outreach locations or at our main office. After one year, your application will be purged and no refund will be given.

      Currently, web applications can only be processed at any of outreach locations and at our main office (Oahu). Neighbor island offices cannot process web applications.

      Thursday Late Openings

      Effective July 2, 2009, the Oahu State ID office will no longer be open till 6:00 p.m. and will resume its normal working hours from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

      Please call  the office nearest you for information on the specific times during which they process State ID card applications.

      At this time, online applications cannot be processed at any of these Governor's Liaison Offices. Lanai and Molokai residents may be processed during an outreach on those islands (see Outreach Programs above).
