Unclaimed Property Program
Aloha!

The State of Hawai`i Unclaimed Property Program is administered under the provisions of Chapter 523A of the Hawai`i Revised Statutes (HRS). This program annually collects and holds, in a custodial capacity abandoned and dormant property from “holders.” As a public service, the Unclaimed Property Program returns property to rightful owners at no charge.

Property in a holder's possession is presumed unclaimed or abandoned if it is unclaimed by an owner after a period of time set forth for the particular type of property as outlined in Chapter 523A, HRS. Holders are required to send a notice to an owner's last known address informing them that unclaimed property will be transferred to the State of Hawai`i Unclaimed Property Program for safekeeping. If an owner does not contact the holder to claim property or if the holder is unable to contact an owner, unclaimed property is escheated to the State of Hawai`i Unclaimed Property Program as required by law.

Examples of unclaimed property are:
•  Dormant savings and checking accounts
•  Unclaimed inheritances
•  Shares of stock
•  Contents of safe deposit boxes
•  Uncashed travelers checks, money orders, dividend checks, payroll checks
•  Deposits held by utilities
•  Insurance and medical refunds
•  Court ordered bail refunds

* Unclaimed Property does not include real estate.
