Commissioners

The Commission is a five member body created by the 1973 legislature under Act 185.  Commissioners are appointed by the Governor from a list of ten nominees submitted by the Judicial Council.  The appointments are not subject to senatorial confirmation.  Commissioners serve on a voluntary basis for a four-year term and may be reappointed for a second four-year term.

Chair

Michael E. Weaver

Michael Weaver is currently an adjunct lecturer at Chaminade University.  A graduate of Damien Memorial School in Honolulu, Mr. Weaver  was the Principal of Damien from 2000-2010, after teaching there and in several other schools in the State for the past 30 years.  He has served as a member of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu School Board and the St. Anthony Kailua School Board (chairman).  Mr. Weaver holds a B.A. (cum laude) in History from Gonzaga University and an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Hawaii.

His four-year term expires on June 30, 2013.

Vice Chair

Dean H. Robb

Dean Robb is a partner in the Carlsmith Ball law firm and member of the Executive Committee.  He concentrates in the area of business/corporate law, with secondary emphasis on maritime and transportation issues.  Mr. Robb also has represented several start-up businesses, including technology companies.  His clients include governments, private corporations and banks in Asia and the Pacific Basin, as well as shipping companies, fishing companies, and maritime insurance companies.

His four-year term expires on June 30, 2012.

Tina (Pedro) Gomes

Tina Pedro Gomes is an independent consultant specializing in data research and collection, statistical analysis, design study, and reports and presentations.  She has assisted on various projects from substance abuse in troubled teens to the needs of elder care.  Tina was a former educator at Lahainaluna High School coordinating and instructing several programs as well as a summer school instructor for Kamehameha Schools - Maui Campus.

She holds an A.A. in Liberal Arts from Maui Community College, a B.A. in Human Relations in Organizations from the University of Hawaii, and a M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Cincinnati.  She has worked with the Hawaii Government Employees Association and served an appointment as a Police Commissioner for Maui County.

Her four-year term expires on June 30, 2015.

Mara Miller

As an independent scholar, Mara delivers lectures, gives workshops, and consults internationally on East Asia, gardens, environmental philosophy, gender studies, and social studies education.  She consulted on Asian family values for the Morris County (NJ) Prosecutor’s Special Unit on Sex Crimes and Child Abuse, and curated exhibits for the Honolulu Academy of Arts and several universities.  A former truck driver and author of The Philosopher’s Garden (forthcoming), The Garden as an Art, and thirty articles, she is currently writing a book on teaching about the atomic bombings.  Miller’s paintings, exhibited in New York City and Honolulu, are in collections in a dozen cities.  Mara earned degrees at Cornell University, the University of Michigan, and Yale University (philosophy).

Her term expires on June 30, 2012.

G. William Snipes

After a 25-year career as an attorney in the U.S., Hong Kong, and Singapore, William Snipes became a private mediator in Maui.  He is a member of the Panel of Mediators of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) as well as a volunteer at the Maui Food Bank.  He is a former member of the Board of Directors of Maui United Way.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from St. Lawrence University in New York, and a J.D. from Stanford University.

His four-year term expires on June 30, 2015.

The Commission staff consists of an executive director, associate director, administrative assistant and elections assistant.
