Commission Projects

Since its first meeting in July 2007, the Patsy T. Mink Commission has been exploring numerous ways in which the state of Hawaii could honor Congresswoman Mink's memory and recognize the tremendous gifts she gave to our state and nation.  The fourteen appointed commissioners, representing various groups and interests, have worked together in an effort to create living and educational programs that embody the spirit and vision of Mrs. Mink.  Two projects are coalescing through the Commission's efforts.

The first is a statewide essay or composition competition to recognize and honor Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink.  The competition is focused on raising the next generation's awareness of Congresswoman Mink's life and work.  It is designed to promote reflection and understanding of the broader issues and ideals that motivated her.  The second Commission project, cosponsored with the Hawaii State Library and the Hawaii Heritage Center, is a statewide traveling exhibition entitled "Patsy Takemoto Mink: From Maui Plantation Town to Washington, D.C.," which will visit libraries across the state of Hawaii.
