Interview with Ruben Parker, Jr.

"There was a lot of history here in Wai‘anae. A lot of the old Hawaiians have lived here, played here, walked through here. There's even the heiau. There's a heiau that they have that the Hawaiians have a lot of strong feeling for.

The people are very friendly. And you know, a lot of times people would say this or that about Wai‘anae, but I have been living here a long time, and whatever problems we have – sure we have problems – but people don't get to hear too much about the every day good things that happen in Waianae. Like at different times my car has broken down, and within minutes someone stops to help. It doesn't take a long time, within two or three minutes someone says, 'Hey bro, you need help?' One time I ran out of gas, and one guy went to get gas and brought it back to me in a gas can. Another time I had a flat, the guy helped me change the flat. I mean, you don't hear about that, but that's been happening to me for the longest time – since I have been living in Wai‘anae."
