Wind direction is recorded from a weather buoy (Station 51003) operated by NOAA and maintained by the National Data Buoy Center. The buoy is located approximately 205 nautical miles from Honolulu. The data reflect the dominant wind patterns and do not account for localized patterns found throughout the islands. As shown, the trade winds accounted for a majority of the recorded winds for 2001. Kona winds are less frequent and were only recorded in the months of February, March, November, and December.
