Abstract:

This dataset gives geographic names for beaches and beach parks in the Waianae moku (traditional district) on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It was clipped from a larger dataset that shows place names for the main Hawaiian Islands.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data set is to give beach and beach park names within the Waianae moku on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It is part of a larger effort to provide the Waianae community, located on the western side of Oahu, ecological and cultural spatial data to assist in their land and resource management efforts.

Process_Description:

This data set was clipped using ESRI ArcGIS to show only the geographic place names within the Waianae moku. It was clipped from the state coverage entitled GEONAMES that shows place names for the main Hawaiian Islands. Features were then selected if they were listed as a beach or park in the Feature Type attribute and used to create a new layer. Finally, the Kaena Point State Park feature was added manually.

The original state coverage was downloaded by the Office of Planning from USGS in March, 2003.
