Abstract:: This dataset shows the boundary of the Waianae moku (traditional district), which is the Area of Focus for the Waianae Ecological Characterization. It was modified from a dataset that shows the ahupuaa divisions in the Waianae moku.
Purpose:: The purpose of this data set is to show the boundary of the Waianae moku, or Area of Focus, on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It is part of a larger effort to provide the Waianae community, located on the western side of Oahu, ecological and cultural spatial data to assist in their land and resource management efforts.

This data set was clipped using ESRI ArcGIS to show only the ahupuaa for the Waianae moku. It was clipped from the state shapefile entitled waianaemodernland that shows the Waianae ahupuaa in relation to the entire Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It was then converted from UTM Zone 4 Old Hawaiian to UTM Zone 4 NAD 83. The ahupuaa polygons were then merged using ArcGIS editing functions to create a shapefile depicting only the boundary for the entire Waianae moku.

The original file was created from information contained in maps from the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) 7.5 minute quadrangle series published in the early 1950's and "Sites of Oahu" by Elspeth P. Sterling and Catherine C. Summers (Bernice P. Bishop Museum, 1978).
