Description:

Abstract:: This dataset shows the 2000 Census Tracts for the Waianae moku (traditional district) on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It was clipped from a larger dataset that includes the 2000 Census Tracts for the eight main Hawaiian Islands.
Purpose:: The purpose of this data set is to display the 2000 Census Tract boundaries for the Waianae moku on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It is part of a larger effort to provide the Waianae community, located on the western side of Oahu, ecological and cultural spatial data to assist in their land and resource management efforts.

Original data used in creation of Hawaii Office of Planning coverage, TRACTS00.

Process_Description:

This data set was clipped using ESRI ArcGIS to show only the 2000 Census Tract boundaries for the Waianae moku. It was clipped from the state coverage entitled TRACTS00 that shows the 2000 Census Tracts for the eight main Hawaiian Islands. Data was added on vehicle ownership, age, renter occupancy, and population density to the attribute table from external census data tables.

The original file was downloaded by county from www.geographynetwork.com in May, 2001. Data from the 5 counties were merged into one layer using ArcView's Geoprocessing extension. It was then projected from decimal degrees to UTM Zone 4 NAD83 using 'Hawaii Datums and Projections' extension in ArcView. The coastline was clipped using the 1983 USGS DLG coastline. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands were removed. Tract Name and Population were added from DBEDT's population table.
