Description:

Abstract:: This dataset shows the pre-Mahele (ca. 1850) ahupuaa boundaries (traditional land divisions) and coastline (ca. 1900) for the Waianae moku (traditional district) on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It was clipped from a larger dataset that showed the pre-Mahele ahupuaa boundaries for the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The original dataset was commonly referred to as ahupuaa boundaries, but the boundaries changed and evolved over time; therefore the Historic Preservation Division of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources refers to this layer as historic land divisions.
Purpose:: The purpose of this data set is to display the pre-Mahele ahupuaa boundaries and coastline for the Waianae moku on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It is part of a larger effort to provide the Waianae community, located on the western side of Oahu, ecological and cultural spatial data to assist in their land and resource management efforts.

This data set was clipped using ESRI ArcGIS to show the historic land divisions for the Waianae moku. It was clipped from the state coverage entitled HistLandDiv, which shows historic land divisions for the the Hawaiian Island of Oahu.

DLNR/HPD process description: The original file was created based on information from "O`ahu Pre-Mahele Moku and Ahupua`a", Lokomaika`iokalanai Snakenberg, Historic Hawai`i, June, 1990; Indices of Awards made by the Boad of Commisioners to Quiet Land Titles, Office of the Commisioner of Public Lands of the Territory of Hawaii, Honolulu, 1929; Pre-1998 USGS 7.5 Minute Quadrangle Boundaries for the Main 8 Hawaiian Islands, Office of Planning, DBET, State of Hawaii; and historic maps from State Archives and State Survey Office, State of Hawai`i.

Office of Planning process description: The ARC/INFO data transmitted to the Office of Planning contain information on the ahupua`a (traditional land division's) of O`ahu. The GIS representation of O`ahu ahupua`a is derived from information in an article by L. Snakenberg named "O`ahu Pre-Mahele Moku and Ahupua`a" published in "Historic Hawaii" Vol. 16, No. 6 (June, 1990). Earlier, in 1987 the Hawaiian Studies Institute of the Kamehameha Schools published a map illustrating the same material.

These are all unedited, draft versions current to January 1995. The projection is the Universal Transverse Mercator (zone 4), originally referenced to the Old Hawaiian Datum (Clarke 1886 Ellipsoid). (Note: converted to NAD83 datum in 2002). The USGS 7.5' quadrangle maps are the primary references for the lines used in the development of this data.
