The original coverage was created as follows: Extracted from the USGS 1983 Digital Line Graphs for the main hawaiian islands. This is a subset of the roads layer of the 1983 DLGs, obtained by reselecting arcs using USGS major and minor codes.
January, 2001: Kauai Roads updated by DLNR, DOFAW:
Secondary roads for the Island of Kauai: The principal updates included addition of GPS road data for two roads. The road names specified here are not official names, but are simply used in reference to the approximate road locations.
The first is the "contour road", primarily in Puu Ka Pele forest reserve. GPS data were collected for this road between Kaaweiki and Papaalai ridges, at approximately 3000 foot elevation. The contour road also extends between Kauhao and Kaaweiki ridges, but I do not have GPS data for this segment. As a substitute, the road was digitized on-screen using 1995 SPOT imagery as a backdrop, and aerial photos as a reference. Minor alterations were also made to some of the ridgetop roads at their intersection points with contour road.
The second is "Keahua road" in Halelea Forest Reserve. This road segment extends from the Keahua Arboretum area towards Waikoko stream, and is represented by GPS data. All GPS data collected for these updates had 5 meter accuracy.
Kauothrd was originally derived by combining digital DLG road data from individual quad maps. Several roads that crossed over quad maps in kauothrd did not match up correctly at the map boundaries. For such roads, DOFAW connected all segments along quad map boundaries that were located within 5 meters of each other by digitizing in a line segment that approximated the average of the "gap" involved. Roads crossing quad boundaries that were more than 5 meters apart were not corrected.
