Description:

Abstract:: This dataset shows soils within the Waianae moku (traditional district) on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It was clipped from a larger dataset that includes soils for the Island of Oahu. Soil types were combined where appropriate to facilitate the ease of understanding the locations of different soil types in Waianae on a map.
Purpose:: The purpose of this data set is to show soil data within the Waianae moku on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. It is part of a larger effort to provide the Waianae community, located on the western side of Oahu, ecological and cultural spatial data to assist in their land and resource management efforts.
Supplemental_Information:: Soil features in this data layer were combined into similar categories based on their name, removing any distinction of slope or rockiness. Most of the attribute fields were deleted due to the fact they no longer directly correlated with the proper soil type/map unit code after the soil types were combined. Please see the "Soils" data layer for more detailed and accurate information pertaining to soils in Waianae.

Process_Description:

This data set was clipped using ESRI ArcGIS to show only soils within the Waianae moku. It was clipped from the state shapefile entitled soils that shows soil data for the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu. Using ArcMap editing functions, soil features were then combined into similar categories based on their name, removing any distinction of slope or rockiness. Most of the attribute fields were then deleted due to the fact they no longer directly correlated with the proper soil type/map unit code after the soil types were combined. The original file was received from the Natural Resrouces Conservation Service in March 2003.
