US map Clean Cities is a voluntary government and industry partnership coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy (www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities/). The program is designed to achieve a cleaner environment in major U.S. cities, reduce dependence on imported oil, and stimulate local economies by increasing the use of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles. Over eighty cities and regions in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada have joined.

Honolulu Clean Cities focuses on Hawaii's alternative fuels and vehicles (electric vehicles, LPG (propane), biodiesel, ethanol, and hydrogen). Honolulu received official designation in August, 1995 (show photo) as the 38th Clean City.

The program is voluntary; organizations participate at whatever level they feel comfortable. For example, agreements between several fleets to use a single alternative fuel refueling site, instead of installing several alternative fuel sites, results in savings for everyone.

Participants are interested in protecting the environment; using and producing clean fuels or vehicles; reducing state and national dependence on imported petroleum; and working together for efficient use of locally-available energy and other resources.

Participants:

Goals:

 As stated in the Memorandum of Understanding, the objectives are to:

  • Develop local industry and create alternative-fuel related industry;
  • Develop reasonable cost alternative fuels and supporting infrastructure;
  • Reduce operation and maintenance cost of vehicles;
  • Reduce state and national dependence on imported petroleum for transportation fuel;
  • Reduce air pollution caused by transportation fuel;
  • Maintain records and statistics of alternative fuel vehicles to determine best fuel, vehicle, and task fit;
  • Educate members and the public on alternative fuels and vehicle technology; and
  • Promote efficient management and maximum utilization of existing local energy resources.

Awards:

Alternative Fuels Information Display

The Honolulu Clean Cities coalition was recognized as an "Outstanding Clean City" by the US Department of Energy; has received an award from the Ford Motor Company for its excellent alternative fuels information program; and was awarded a grant from the US Department of Energy and the State of Hawaii for a "Multi-Tiered Alternative Transportation Fuels Outreach Program" which included funding for an "electron marathon," in which high school students build (and race!) electric vehicles, development of the Alternative Fueled Activity Book for kids, production of displays, and participation in exhibitions, trade shows, and seminars.

Becoming
a Member:

vehicles and members

As a Stakeholder in Honolulu Clean Cities, your organization will have access to many public and private sector organizations that share the common goal of a cleaner, greener, healthier, and energy independent Hawaii through alternate fuel use. Your organization will also have the opportunity to deliver its message through our participation in various exhibits, shows, displays, parades and other public events.

In order to join us "officially" and receive recognition for your participation, we require:

1. A non-binding letter of commitment (on your organization's letterhead),
    addressed to:
    Robert Primiano
    President, Honolulu Clean Cities
    c/o City and County of Honolulu
    1000 Uluohia Street
    Kapolei, HI 96707

    The letter should simply state that your organization is supportive
    of the objectives of Clean Cities and should indicate how your
    organization does (or will) support one or more of the objectives.
    If you have a fleet, please include information on any planned or
    projected alternative fuel or alternative fueled vehicle use.

2. A signed Addendum (http://www.state.hi.us/dbedt/ert/cc/mou-addendum2.pdf )
    to our non-binding Memorandum of Understanding
    (http://www.state.hi.us/dbedt/ert/cc/mou.pdf ).

3. Send the letter and Addendum to Robert at the address above.

That's it!

Whether or not you decide to join, please give us a call, drop us a line, check out the photo album, or come by in person to a monthly meeting. At the very least, you'll get to see some cool "clean fuel" cars and trucks!
