Wind Energy Resource Data

Wind resource maps

Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui Electric Company, the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are funding a project to develop high-resolution wind resource maps for Hawaii.

VALIDATED wind maps are provided below.

Kauai

Wind class of 4 or higher is considered a good wind resource

Oahu

Wind class of 4 or higher is considered a good wind resource

Oahu has limited wind energy resource

Maui County

Wind class of 4 or higher is considered a good wind resource

Maui has a good wind energy resource in several areas.

Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe

Molokai has wind energy resources.          Lanai has a wind energy resource          Kahoolawe has a good wind energy resource on the southern part of the island

Hawaii

Wind class of 4 or higher is considered a good wind resource

The Big Island has several excellent wind energy resource sites.

Maps

These maps have a grid resolution of 200 meters and provide wind speeds at 30, 50, 70, and 100 meters as well as wind power densities at 50 meters.  These maps have been validated by local meteorologists and by NREL.

The high-resolution wind resource maps can be reviewed in Adobe PDF format.

If you have difficulty with PDF files, RIGHT-CLICK and "save target as" and save the file(s) to your desktop, then open the file directly from the desktop.

Wind View page

The Wind View CD is available by mail. Please call (808) 587-3809 or email mtome @ dbedt.hawaii.gov.

It includes the ArcReader software, wind rose CSV and JPG files, DAT files, shapefiles, *.nit files, grids (*.adf files), and a user manual.

When the CD-ROM is inserted, the image shown at the left is displayed. You can view the User Guide, install the ArcReader software, or download the Wind View project files.

If you need the data RIGHT NOW and can't wait for the CD-ROM, you MAY be able to make use of the GI file below. Instructions on how to create a CD from a GI file (assuming you have a compatible CD-ROM burner and software) are available in your hardware documentation or online from Sony; or, see the CD-ROM FAQ. If your CD-ROM burner software doesn't use GI files, it may not work. This might be frustrating, if you've already spent 3 hours downloading the huge file below, so check compatibility first.

CAUTION:
the Global Image file is LARGE:
529 Megabytes.

Data

Some of the publicly-available wind energy resource data collected over the years has been compiled and is available in text and Excel file formats below.

Summaries of the data are provided below. This is for general information only; data collection methods, time periods, and completeness vary considerably between data sets, so summary data should not be used for siting or determining the feasibility of a wind turbine or wind farm installation without additional verification of the data and/or data collection.

Data from three data collection efforts are provided below:

This is not a comprehensive list. Other data sets exist. If you have wind energy data for Hawaii and are interested in making this data publicly available, please call (808) 587-3809 or email mtome @ dbedt.hawaii.gov. Thank you.
