Children's Discovery Center 111 Ohe Street, Honolulu, Hawai`i The Hawai`i Childrens Discovery Center is located on what was once a 'brownfield', the site of an abandoned city incinerator. The Center, owned and operated by a private nonprofit corporation, incorporates the old incinerator structure and exhaust stack in its design. The State Hawaii Community Development Authority completed site assessment, site cleanup, and structural renovations before the building and property were turned over to the nonprofit corporation for development and construction of the Center. Today, the Center houses nearly 38,000 square feet of hands-on, interactive exhibits for children and their families to explore and discover things about themselves and the world. The Center, which opened in 1998, is already considered by many to be one of the finest childrens museums in the country. |
