Greenhouse Gas
Act 234, Session Laws of Hawaii 2007, established the State’s policy framework and requirements to address Hawaii’s greenhouse gas emissions, recognizing the potential adverse effects of the recent climate change and global warming to Hawaii’s economy, public health, natural resources, and environment. The general purpose of Act 234 is to establish and cost-effectively achieve State policy of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions and limits at or below the best estimates and updates of the inventory of Hawaii’s greenhouse gas emissions estimates of 1990 emissions levels by January 1, 2020.
| ................................... 2009 Public WorkshopsIn 2007, a State law was passed with the intent of mitigating the effects of global warming. Act 234 calls for the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in Hawaii, caused mostly by fossil fuel-based electricity generation and transportation uses, to be reduced to or below the 1990 levels by the year 2020. A task force was formed to develop cost-effective measures for reaching that goal. The public is invited to a series of workshops held in all counties to present the potential workplans being considered by the task force for implementing greenhouse gas reductions. A final recommendation will be given to the 2010 Legislature by the task force. See (November 10, 2009) ICF work plans report here. Workshops will be held on Kauai, Maui, Big Island, and Oahu. Dates and locations are available here. View presentation slides from the Kauai (11/3/2009) and Maui (11/4/2009) public workshops here.
