Honolulu--Mark Kuikawa Anderson has been formally named deputy director of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT). He had been serving as "acting" deputy since early January 2005.

"We are pleased to have Mark accept the appointment as DBEDT deputy," said Governor Linda Lingle. "After a comprehensive search for candidates, we concluded that he has the skills and the team-oriented attitude that will support our Administration's efforts to maintain Hawaii's economic momentum and increase business development opportunities."

Anderson formerly served as administrator of the Foreign Trade Zone #9, a division of DBEDT. He has also worked in DBEDT's Investment Attraction Branch as an economic development specialist, where he focused on increasing capital investment into the state and supported foreign trade missions to Asia.

In 2000, Anderson was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to serve as a member of the Hawai‘i/Pacific Region District Export Council. He is a past-chairperson and member of the Advisory Council for the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center, and served as treasurer of Hui Hanai, an organization dedicated to publishing the musical works of Queen Liliuokalani.

Anderson was raised in Paauilo on the Big Island and on Oahu, and is a graduate of the University of Washington and Punahou School. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in urban planning at the University of Hawaii.

"I look forward to working with Governor Lingle and DBEDT Director Ted Liu to expand the state's economic diversity," Anderson said. "We are currently in a unique position to promote new sectors of our economy and to help existing businesses reach for new opportunities."
