Hands-On Workshop for Census Data Announced

Honolulu--A free census workshop entitled, A Current View of Hawai‘i from Census Bureau Data will be conducted November 6, 2007 in Honolulu. Co-sponsored by DBEDT and the U.S. Census Bureau's L.A. Regional Office, the workshop will focus on accessing data for Hawai‘i from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey and the Local Employment Dynamics programs.
"This training and the up-to-date information provided will help marketers, planners and other decision-makers to better analyze and understand the changing and mobile populations in the different regions of our state," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu. "It will be invaluable to anyone who uses census data."
Census Bureau Information Specialist Mr. Jerry Wong, from the L.A. Regional Office of the Census Bureau, will conduct the workshop.
The ongoing, American Community Survey replaces the census long-form used in previous 10-year censuses to obtain detailed household information. It was developed in response to the need for economic, social, demographic and housing data on a more frequent basis.
New geographic profiles, rankings and selected population profiles (such as for Native Hawaiians) are among the products that will be shown at this workshop.
In addition, the workshop will provide hands-on training in accessing data from the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Program, which is a voluntary partnership between the states and the Census Bureau. The LED merges state wage records with other data to produce new information about jobs, workers, industries and the local economy.
Space is limited, therefore, interested participants are urged to sign up soon for one of the two, three-hour workshop sessions. Both sessions cover the same workshop information.
