Former Naval Officer Will Guide Renewable Energy Development
HONOLULU--Theodore 'Ted' Peck, a former naval engineer, consultant, and energy management specialist, has been named energy administrator for the Strategic Industries Division at the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT)
"We are pleased to have Ted Peck leading our energy team in Hawaii," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu. "Ted has the experience and the vision to advance the Lingle-Aiona administration's goal of reducing our dependence on foreign oil and developing the state's abundant renewable energy resources."
Peck has been with the State's energy office for the last year, and has had a leadership role in numerous initiatives including energy planning, the shaping of the state's approach to renewable energy permitting and facilitation, the state hydrogen program, the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative partnership between the state and U.S. Department of Energy, the greenhouse gas emission reduction task force, and a number of other strategic initiatives.
"My initial focus is on our team working with all branches of our state government to form a sound policy strategy for Hawaii's future," Peck said. "We've spent the last ten months working with our partner the Department of Energy and the Hawaii energy community to build a solid foundation for moving forward in achieving our mutual goals of energy independence and renewable energy development."
Peck has an extensive background in strategic planning. Prior to working for the State, he was a principal with Booz Allen Hamilton and led the Honolulu office for its first five years. Within the firm, he led the development of an understanding of the positioning of Hawaii as a prime location for energy technology, innovation, investment, and transformation. Under his leadership, the firm grew from a small presence to over 200 consultants supporting clients across the Pacific.
He also has significant technical credentials, having graduated Cum Laude from the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor's of science degree in physics; graduated in the top 5 percent from the Naval Nuclear Power School; and received recognition as the top graduate from the S1C Nuclear Power Training Unit. He qualified as a Naval Nuclear Engineer with the second highest rating possible.
In 2004, he was selected as one of Pacific Business News "40 under Forty" and in 2006 was a Pacific Century Fellow.
