For Immediate Release: January 5, 2009
DBEDT News Release 09-01
Honolulu--A free census workshop, Navigating the Census Bureau's 2007 American Community Survey Data is being held on January 27, 2009 in Honolulu. Co-sponsored by DBEDT and the U.S. Census Bureau's L.A. Regional Office, the workshop will focus on accessing data for Hawaii from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS).
"The U.S. Census Bureau surveys about 7,500 households, 500 group quarter people, covering about 22,000 people each year in Hawaii," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu. "This is the largest and most comprehensive survey conducted in Hawaii. The training will ensure our government agencies and businesses understand the data and data collection methodology, and make good uses of them in policy making and business planning, especially in this critical economic time."
Dr. Morgan Walls-Dines, Census Bureau information specialist from the L.A. Regional Office of the Census Bureau, will conduct the workshop. Dr. Dines has 10 years of Federal government work experience and has held a variety of positions including supervisory survey statistician, research psychologist and social science analyst.
The ongoing, American Community Survey replaces the census long-form used in previous 10-year censuses to obtain detailed household information. It was developed in response to the need for economic, social, demographic and housing data on a more frequent basis.
Previous ACS data releases have covered areas of 65,000 people or more. Three-year estimates (combining data for the period 2005-2007) for areas with populations of 20,000 people and more became available for the first time this past December. In the State of Hawaii, this included the County of Kauai as well as 10 other places such as Hilo, Kahului, Pearl City, and Waimalu.
The workshop will contain an overview of the Census Bureau's ACS Internet pages. Data users will become familiar with various census products such as geographic area profiles, comparative profiles (showing two consecutive years of data and whether the differences were significant), rankings and selected population profiles (selected races such as for Native Hawaiians and for selected country of birth such as the Philippines). An update of the 2010 Census activities will also be provided.
Space is limited; therefore, interested participants are urged to sign up soon for one of the two, three-hour workshop sessions. Both sessions cover the same workshop information.
