HONOLULU—The International Code Council (ICC) has appointed DBEDT Institutional Energy Analyst Howard Wiig to the International Energy Conservation Code Committee (IECC) for the upcoming 2009/2010 Code Development Cycle.

The ICC is a professional code-writing association that develops codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings. Most U.S. cities, counties and states use the codes developed by the ICC.

"There are substantial advantages in adopting the ICC suite of codes," Wiig said. "Architects, engineers, designers and contractors can now work with a consistent set of requirements throughout the states."

Wiig's participation in the Energy Conservation Committee recognizes Hawaii's role as a leader in developing energy conservation code provisions specific to warm climates and highlights the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative that seeks to reduce Hawaii's dependence on oil by 70 percent by the year 2030. A large portion of that goal will be reached through conservation and energy efficiency.
