Free Workshop on the American Community Survey Scheduled
For Immediate Release: January 5, 2010
DBEDT News Release 10-01
HONOLULUA free workshop on accessing data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) will be held on January 26, 2010 in Honolulu. The workshop, A View of Hawaii's Economic and Other Conditions From the 2008 American Community Survey (ACS) Data, is cosponsored by the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) and the U.S. Census Bureau's Los Angeles Regional Office.
"The American Community Survey information provides the most current insights into the social and economic conditions of the people in Hawaii, how we are doing over time, and where we are in comparison with other states in the nation," said DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu. "The data is very useful for business planning, policy analysis on our economic development, and for the general public to understand what has changed in our community."
The ACS data is the most comprehensive data covering demographic, social, economic, and housing information by geographical areas and by detailed population groups. The workshop will be conducted by the 32-year Census Bureau veteran, Jerry Wong, an information specialist from the Los Angeles Regional Office of the Census Bureau, who has a wide variety of federal government work experience and is especially knowledgeable with ACS and decennial census data.
The 2008 ACS includes geographic area profiles for a specific desired area, narrative profiles summarizing information in a text format, geographic comparison tables comparing different geographic areas, ranking tables by states, profiles comparing one area over time (2006, 2007 and 2008 data in one table), economic briefs and selected population profiles (selected races such as for Native Hawaiians and for selected country of birth such as the Philippines).
Workshop participants will also learn how the 2010 Census is being conducted in Hawaii. The 2010 census data will be the foundation for annual population estimates and for the American Community Survey data released over the next 10 years so it is important that everyone be counted. The annual American Community Survey data has replaced the previous long-form data collected every 10 years. Therefore, only short-form questionnaires containing 10 questions will be given to every household in the 2010 Census.
Space is limited; therefore, interested participants are urged to sign up soon for one of the two, three-hour workshop sessions. Both sessions cover the same workshop information.
