Bio 2006, Chicago
Purpose:
Attended this Bio International Convention to promote Hawaii’s life science developments at the largest and most prestigious biotechnology industry event in the world, 23 individuals from 16 organizations representing private industry, academia and government from the State of Hawaii participated in BIO 2006 at the McCormick Center in Chicago.
Featured this year as part of the Hawaii Pavilion was Hoana Medical’s flagship medical device, the LG1™ Intelligent Medical Vigilance System™. The system monitors a patient’s heart rate, respiration and bed exit with no physical connections. Hoana Medical is the first Hawaii company to receive FDA 510(k) approval for a medical device, allowing clearance to begin marketing and letting this product.
A Hawaii Life Sciences Forum, “Pathogens Of Tomorrow: Hawaii’s Role in Detection, Prevention and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases” was also organized by national infectious disease expert, Dr. Duane Gubler, Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Tropical Medicine & Infectious Disease, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii. Dr. Gubler was joined by Dr. Carolyn Weeks-Levy of Hawaii Biotech and Jeffrey Almond of Sanofi Pasteur.
Results:
• InCode Biopharmaceutics secured $4 million in venture capital.
• Over 200 contacts made from the Hawaii Pavilion
• Leveraged $11,000 in private sector support for event.
• Verbal commitment from BIO to re-convene the PacRim Industrial Bio meeting in November 2007.
• UH Med School Bioscience Conference website received over 100 hits as a result of promotional efforts at BIO.
Other highlights:
• Discussed potential partnerships with Utah State (related to workforce development) and NC Research Triangle.
• Met with Shizuoka Prefecture officials to explore common areas of interest.
• Met with Diana Robinson of Aisling Capital, who just raised $500 million for life sciences investment and is interested in marine biotech.
• David Murdoch visited the Hawaii Pavilion and expressed interest in investing in a crop or business, particularly for Lanai.
