Homestead Leases

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) welcomes your interest in the Hawaiian Homes program. The Hawaiian Homes Commission Act provides for awarding Hawaiian home lands available for homestead purposes to eligible applicants that are "native Hawaiian" defined as an individual having not less than one-half (50%) Hawaiian ancestry and are at least 18 years old.

Approximately 200,000 acres of homestead lands are provided for the Hawaiian Home Lands program. These homestead lands are located on the islands of O'ahu, Hawai'i, Kaua'i, Maui, Lanai, and Moloka'i for residential, agricultural, and pastoral homestead leases.

To comply with legal requirements, applicants must rely on documented evidence to meet eligibility. It is the responsibility of all applicants to trace and prove, through documentation, their biological line of Hawaiian ancestry. Documented evidence can be obtained from Document Resource Centers and LDS Family History Centers.

Only Official DHHL Application Forms Will Be Accepted. Applications must be notarized with documentation attached to support the 50% Hawaiian eligibility requirements. Accepted applications will be time stamped, signed by a DHHL representative, and filed in the order received. A confirmation letter with a copy of the application will be mailed to the applicant. This process cannot be done over the internet at this time.
