---

Women’s Health Month was initiated in 1994 by the HSCSW.  The purpose of Women’s Health Month is to maximize public awareness of women’s health issues, empower women to be their own health advocates, reduce health care disparities, and promote the physical and emotional well-being of women in Hawaii.  For the 13th year the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women is organizing Women’s Health Month.

The goal of Women’s Health Month is to widely communicate that women’s health is more than the absence of disease: it encompasses physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.  The month-long event includes educational workshops, health fairs, lectures, fitness activities and other special events.

Women’s Health Month was established under the Commission’s mandates to first, “Act as a central clearinghouse and coordinating body for governmental and non-governmental activities and information relating to the status of women.” Secondly, “Create public awareness and understanding of the needs of women.” (HRS 367)

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
