Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the Kawainui Marsh Wetland Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project is now available for review and comment
The Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the Kawainui Marsh Wetland Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project is now available for review and comment. The project proposes to implement wetland restoration and habitat enhancement improvements to about 80 acres of Kawainui Marsh. Improvements include: 1) wetland restoration and erosion control; 2) habitat restoration for native Hawaiian waterbirds, migratory shorebirds and waterfowl; 3) improvements to support DOFAW’s maintenance operations; and 4) some public access and passive outdoor recreational amenities. Please refer to the link above to view the DEA and information on providing comments. The comment period ends on February 7, 2012, however, comments will be accepted until February 17th.
Public Meeting: KAWAINUI MARSH WETLAND RESTORATION AND HABITAT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT
DLNR will conduct a Public Informational Meeting on the Kawainui Marsh Wetland Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Le Jardin Academy, Wang Auditorium located at 917 Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua, Hawaii. The open house starts at 6:00 p.m with the formal public meeting occurring from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Full description attached.
FERAL GOAT CONTROL PERMITS AVAILABLE FOR HUNTING UNIT F ON KAUAI
DOFAW announces an opportunity for interested individuals to assist the Division in an animal control of feral goats in Hunting Unit F on Kauai, pursuant to Title 13, Chapter 123, “Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting,” §13-123-9, “Nuisance or crop damage.” Animal control is being limited to archery and muzzleloader. Interested individuals will need to show a valid hunting license and will be required to sign an animal control permit. Animal control permits will be available at the Lihue Division of Forestry and Wildlife office at 3060 Eiwa St. Rm. 306 Lihue, HI 96766
SEARCHING FOR NATIVE AND CULTURALLY IMPORTANT TREES TO COMPETE IN THE NATIONAL BIG TREES COMPETITION
The Department of Land and Natural Resources invites the public to help us take part in a national Big Trees competition. The Big Trees Program, run by American Forests, is a national competition to find the largest trees of particular species in the nation. American Forests’ 2011 National Register of Big Trees represents more than 660 species – 30 more than last year – with trees in 45 states and the District of Columbia. The State of Hawai‘i is looking forward to taking part in this Big Tree competition and is searching for potential candidates of the following species.
2012 LANAI MOUFLON SHEEP HUNTING SEASON
The State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources is pleased to announce that application forms for the 2012 Lanai Mouflon Sheep Hunting Season, together with instruction sheets, are available at all Division of Forestry and Wildlife Offices Statewide. It is imperative that hunter applicants obtain and pay particular attention to the hunt instruction sheet and addendum for more changes in the application process.

Hawaii has received three champions and three co-champions in the Big Tree competition run by American Forests.
Ka‘u Forest Reserve Draft Environmental Assessment
The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has released a Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for a management plan for the 61,641-acre Ka‘u Forest Reserve. The DEA is now available for review and comment until June 22. Please view the full announcement to see the DEA and instructions for providing comments.

Mānā Plains Forest Reserve: Draft Environmental Assessment
The State of Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) is proposing to restore wetland and associated coastal upland habitat within the , on the western side of the island of Kauaʻi. This restoration project is referred to as the Mānā Plain Wetland Restoration Project.
