Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the Kawainui Marsh Wetland Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project is now available for review and comment

The Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the Kawainui Marsh Wetland Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project is now available for review and comment. The project proposes to implement wetland restoration and habitat enhancement improvements to about 80 acres of Kawainui Marsh. Improvements include: 1) wetland restoration and erosion control; 2) habitat restoration for native Hawaiian waterbirds, migratory shorebirds and waterfowl; 3) improvements to support DOFAW’s maintenance operations; and 4) some public access and passive outdoor recreational amenities. Please refer to the link above to view the DEA and information on providing comments. The comment period ends on February 7, 2012, however, comments will be accepted until February 17th.

The Draft Environmental Assessment (DEA) for the Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve Management Plan is now available for review and comment. This plan outlines management actions over the next fifteen years to protect, maintain, and enhance the Reserve’s unique natural resources. Proposed actions include fencing, feral ungulate removal, weed control, habitat restoration, outplanting rare plants, monitoring, public access, outreach and education, fire management, enhanced enforcement and continued collaboration with partners. NOTICE OF ANIMAL CONTROL ACTIVITIES AND TEMPORARY CLOSURE
OF MAUNA KEA FOREST RESERVE AND KAOHE GAME MANAGEMENT AREA
The Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Department of Land and Natural Resources will conduct animal control activities, specifically aerial shooting from helicopters, within Palila Critical Habitat in the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve (Unit A) and Kaohe Game Management Area (Unit G) on the island of Hawaii for feral goats, feral sheep, mouflon and mouflon/feral sheep hybrids.
