These Management Guidelines are a set of guidelines for balancing desired levels of activities (human use) on DOFAW managed lands, and initially emphasize three program areas with conflicting resource demands or user groups.
Overall Goal of the Management Guidelines
To formulate and use a consistent philosophy for management priorities and actions by DOFAW, and to make those known to agency personnel, partners, and the general public.
What Are the DOFAW Management Guidelines?
They are a set of guidelines for balancing desired levels of activities (human use) on DOFAW managed lands, and initially emphasize three program areas with conflicting resource demands or user groups.
The guidelines recognize and prioritize the importance and sustainability of native ecosystems. They are intended to provide administrative policy direction, prioritize resource management activities and will be updated every 5 years to reflect changing conditions.
Guideline Objectives
- Guide management priorities and actions
- Determine appropriate activity intensities based on the integrity of existing natural resources.
- Ensure continuity for our management programs as staff, political conditions, and social values change over time; and
- Provide a mechanism for public and agency interaction that improves the understanding of our management programs by the community, other agencies and policy makers.
How Were the guideline Maps Developed?
- Using available sources, DOFAW staff created vegetation maps based on the quality of native habitats located on DOFAW lands
- Based on the overall goal of ensuring the perpetuity of native habitats, DOFAW determined appropriate levels of intensity within each of these vegetation classes three initial activities--forest products, recreation, and game management.
- Meetings were held with the public, cooperating agencies, and researchers. Input from these meetings were used to refine maps to their current form. Such meetings and the exchange of information will continue.
What Do The Maps Show?
- Lands under DOFAW jurisdiction.
- Native vegetation classified according to its relative intactness and habitat quality.
- Recommended levels of human use within these vegetation classifications for the following activities: Outdoor Recreation, Forest Products, Game Management and Hunting
