DESCRIPTION:The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will h
 old a public hearing at 6\:30 p.m. on Monday\, July 12\, to receive pu
 blic testimony on a proposed extension of Pu`u Maka`ala Natural Area R
 eserve (NAR) in TMK (3) 2-4-008-009 (POR) . The meeting will take plac
 e at The Cooper Center\, 19-4030 Wright Road\, Volcano\, HI 96785. The
  proposed extension of the Reserve is meant to protect large tracts of
  koa and ohia forest\, where many endangered native Hawaiian animal an
 d plants such as the nene (Nesochen sandwichensis) can survive. Some o
 f these species are extremely rare – such as the Mauna Loa silverswo
 rd (Argyroxiphium kauense) which is only known from three sites in the
  wild. The Reserve would also encompass alpine shrublands\, bogs\, and
