New Extension added to Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve

A new extension of 5,795 acres has been added to the Kahaualea NAR in the Puna District of Hawaii. This new NAR area is adjacent to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and NAR designation will facilitate management of the native ecosystems found in that region, and strengthen the protection of the areas already protected in the Kahaualea NAR. The kipuka of ohia forests in this area survive on one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
