Plant Facilities Construction – Kanaio, Maui

Goals of Project:

-       Construct a deer-proof perimeter fence at Kanaio Natural Area Reserve

-       Develop methods for habitat restoration

What was done? /What is being done?

  • Before and during the construction of the perimeter fence the following was done:

1)      Preparation and approval of an Environmental Assessment.

2)      Preparation of an archaeological inventory survey.

3)      Get permission from the Hawaii State Land Division to construct fencing on a portion of land not owned by the state adjacent to both Kanaio NAR and Ulupalakua Ranch.

4)      Bulldozing of the fence corridor to prepare for fence construction.

5)      Installing fence posts.

6)      Initial stretching of fence wire.

7)      Construction anticipated to be completed in December 2007.

  • During fence construction, staff implemented an alien plant control program, targeting Bocconia frutescens.  In the future other priority weeds will be dealt with.  Once the perimeter fence is completed an animal control program will be put into action to remove all animals.
  • Rare dry land plant species have been out-planted with recently constructed enclosures as well as some endangered and more common species.

Project Information:

To date, over 200 acres have been covered eradicating Bocconia frutescens.
