Projects on Oahu

Coastal Habitat Enhancement

Goals of Project:

-       Stabilize and increase rare plant populations by propagation and out-planting

-       Habitat protection

-       Find and survey new out-planting sites

What was done? /What is being done?

Albutilon

  • Establishment of a population of Abutilon menziesii (63 plants) in Waipahu and expansion of Ewa villages and Diamond Head populations.
  • Experimental plots were installed in Pahole NAR.
  • 216 Sesbania tomentosa propagated and out-planted.

Sesbania

  • Expanded Sesbania population at Kaohikaipu Islet by 20 plants and 3 Capparis sanwichiana were out-planted on Kaohikaipu Islet.
  • Monitored species out-planted in previous years and collected cuttings, fruits, and seeds from rare species.

Project Information:

Endangered (E) plants: 93 out-planted and 216 propagated

Plant Habitat Management – Maintenance and Enhancement, Waianae Mountains, Oahu

 Waianae Mtns

Goals of Project:

-       Establish an area for cleaning equipment used for and when spraying pesticides

·        Purchase a 6,000-gallon water holding tank

·        Replace aging 2,500-gallon polyethylene holding tanks

What was done? /What is being done?

  • Construction of the tank and connecting it to the gutter system has been completed.  The pump system will be completed in early 2008.

Project Information:

New 6,000-gallon tank replaces an old 2,500-gallon polyethylene tank.

Plant Facilities Construction – Kapuna Gulch-Oahu

Goals of Project:

-        Build fence line in the Kapuna Gulch

What was done? /What is being done?

  • Environmental Assessment (EA) for the project completed.
  • Clearing of the fence line corridor completed.
  • Construction of the fence has been completed.

Project Information:

Fence line will protect 325 acres in the Waianae Mountains.

Plant Restoration and Enhancement, Micropropagation/Storage, Lyon Arboretum, Oahu

Goals of Project:

-       Prevent further extinction of native plant species through propagation methods

-       Propagate and multiply plant samples for future out-planting

-       Maintain living samples of plant species

What was done? /What is being done?

Lyon Microprop

  • Propagation of native and common plant species from cutting, seeds and fruits received from various sources.
  • There are 11,308 plants maintained at the Lyon Arboretum, its adjacent greenhouse and at the Magoon facilities.  63% of those plants are federally listed or proposed for listing.
  • 458 plants consisting of 12 Hawaiian Native species have been sent out for out-planting, habitat restoration/reintroduction, research, education, botanical and display garden and forestry.
  • Six new Hawaiian endemic (found only in 1 place) plant species were submitted to the Lyon Arboretum

Project Information:

Of the 78 species received between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007:

-       39 listed as Endangered

-       11 as Species of Concern

-       1 as Proposed Endangered

-       4 as Candidate

Currently there are 185 plant species in inventory of which:

10 are labeled as Candidate Species

            34 are Species of Concern

            4 are Proposed Endangered

            96 are endangered

Plant Restoration and Enhancement – Pahole Rare Plant Facility, Oahu

Goals of Project:

-       Out-planting and monitoring of native Hawaiian plant species

-       Provide facilities for species that cannot be stored

-       Propagation of rare plants for out-planting

-       Production of more common native species

Pahole 1

What was done? /What is being done?

Pahole 2

  • Work on the new 2,500 square foot greenhouse continued.  The structure of the greenhouse was built and shading, walkway benches and irrigation are underway and will be completed in 2008.
  • Foundation and ground work for the greenhouse was completed in spring 2007.  This included the installation of a drainage system under and around the greenhouse and final structural stability testing prior to building.
  • Pahole Rare Plant Facility (PRPR) is dependent on catchment water for all of its water requirements.  Installation of a new gutter system was completed in 2007.  Also the third water tank that was purchased in 2006 was installed, connected to the main water line system and put into use in 2007.  A replacement tank for the lower building has been purchased and will be installed in 2008.

Pahole 3

  • A total of 2457 plants were grown at PRPF in 2006.  226 of these plants from eight species were given to Oahu Plant Extinction Prevention Program (OPEP) for out-planting.  There are 28 OPEP species being grown at PRPF for future out-planting or living collection plants.
  • As a project UH Hawaiian Internship Program intern Jessica Chong Sixteen plants or Cyrtandra kaulantha were produced.  Leaves and cuttings were taken and transplanted to individual pots by September 2007.  These plants are being grown at PRPF and are ready for out-planting.

Columbrina

  • In cooperation with NARS specialist Talbert K. Takahama, a propagation project with Colubrina oppositifolia was begun in March 2006, and is ongoing.  Cuttings and seeds have been collected and the most recent plants are growing well.  To date 166 plants from 38 founders have been propagated.
  • Currently seedlings from Acacia, Bobea, Hedyotis, Diospyros, Psychotria, Santalum, Sapindus, and Pisonia are being grown.  Also cuttings of Isodendrion and several species of Hibiscus are being grown as well.

Project Information:

Endangered (E) plants – 2623 propagated

226 plants sent to OPEP
