The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

On May 26, 2000, President Clinton directed the Secretaries of the Interior and Commerce, in cooperation with the State of Hawaii and in consultation with the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, to develop recommendations by August 25 for a new, coordinated management regime to increase protection for the coral reef ecosystem of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and provide for sustainable use. This process should:

The President specifically directed the Departments of the Interior and Commerce to conduct "visioning sessions, which would provide opportunities for public hearing and comment to help shape the final recommendations." A summary report on the input gained from the public during these sessions will be included with the recommendations sent to the President.
