SHPD
maintains an inventory of all known historic properties in Hawai`i.
Approximately 38,000 properties currently comprise this
inventory.
The inventory expands at the rate of approximately 1000 new sites per year. Records on these properties are included in over 3,500 archaeological reports housed in SHPD's library and open to the public.
The division is now in the process of computerizing a simplified inventory
so it will be accessible via the State's
Geographic
Information System. The inventory is the primary tool utilized in making
historic preservation decisions in Hawai`i.
Certain historic properties found in the inventory receive the
additional distinction of placement in the
Hawai`i
and National Register of Historic Places. Such placement is a
major step in making them eligible for Federal, State and County
historic preservation incentives. All properties listed in the
inventory receive the same level of regulatory protection, regardless
of their register status.
The division maintains the Hawai`i and National Register of
Historic Places and processes all nominations to either register. For
such purposes the
Hawai`i
Historic Places Review Board is administratively attached to the
division. Click on a link below to see the program's administrative
rules.
