Certified Local Government Program

HAWAI`I'S CERTIFIED LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

 

The Kaua`i County Building, Kaua`i. A grant to the Kaua`i CLG was used to repair and maintain this building. A local government can participate directly in the National Historic Preservation program when the State Historic Preservation Officer certifies that the local government has established an historic preservation commission and operates a program meeting Federal and State standards.

A local government that receives such certification is known as a"Certified Local Government" or CLG and is eligible for Federal historic preseration grants.

State Historic Preservation Offices began certifying local governments in 1985 and there are over 700 in the program. Fifty percent of Hawai`i's local governments participate in the program, with Kaua`i County and Maui County recognized as CLGs. Both of these counties have commissions which regularly meet and provide historic preservation advice to their planning department and other county agencies.
