An Environmental Management System (eMS) is described as a continual cycle of planning, implementing, reviewing and improving the processes and actions that an organization undertakes to meet its environmental obligations.

Like many organizations, the HIARNG uses ISO 14001 (International Standards Organization) as a model for implementing its Environmental Management System. This standard adheres to the Plan, Do, Check and Act model that reinforces the need for continuous improvement

The HIARNG'S eMS started out with an Environmental Policy signed by Major General Robert G.F. Lee, State Adjutant General.

This policy includes the HIARNG's commitment to preventing pollution from the source and a requirement of complying, and where practical, exceeding all relevant environmental laws.

The policy also affirms the importance of personnel becoming stewards of environmental protection. This concept involves being responsible enough to bring operation deficiencies to the attention of the HIARNG management/leadership.
