Hilo soldiers headed to Mideast- Tribune-Herald

About a hundred Hilo-based National Guard units will be spending the holidays in the Middle East, although military secrecy surrounds the locations and timing of their deployment.
The state Department of Defense announced Monday that the 50 men and women of the Army National Guard's Company C, 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment, are heading to Kuwait, instead of Iraq as they were expecting. The unit provides general aviation support with UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
President Obama's announcement that the U.S. is pulling out of that country by the end of the year forced a rejiggering of those plans.
"They're getting re-missioned to Kuwait," said National Guard spokesman Capt. Jeff Hickman.
For security reasons the military is not saying where in Kuwait the unit is being sent on their nine-month deployment.
Lt. Col. Charles Anthony said that the decision to send them to the Persian Gulf country was made about two weeks ago, and that family members of the soldiers have been made aware of it.
The other unit, the 291st Combat Communications Squadron of the Air National Guard, is heading to an undisclosed location in support of Operation New Dawn.
"Operation New Dawn is the name that is given to current operations in and around Iraq," Anthony said. "However, having said that, don't read too much into that.
"They can be supporting operations in Iraq without actually being in Iraq," Anthony said. Operational security requirements prevent him from saying where in the region the unit will be operating.
The Air National Guard unit will be supporting communications efforts within the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing's area of responsibility.
The troops will be departing quietly in several groups, the first of which may have already left Hawaii, Anthony said, for a six-month deployment.
