2008 GOVERNOR’S VETERANS DAY CEREMONY
WHEN: Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 1:15 p.m.
WHERE: Memorial Plaza, Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery (HSVC), Kaneohe, HI
WHO: Veterans Affairs Deputy Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs Steve L. Muro, Maj. Gen. Robert Lee, veterans and the public
WHAT: The Office of Veterans Services (OVS) is coordinating the 2008 Governor's Veterans Day Ceremony. This years’ event themed: Salute Our Veterans, will begin at 1:15 p.m. with a musical prelude by the Hawaii Army National Guard's 111th Army Band.
Veterans Administration Deputy Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs Steve L. Muro is scheduled to address the audience. There will be a wreath presentation at the Memorial Plaza Monument to commemorate Veterans Day.
VA Deputy Undersecretary Muro will present a check for $2,755,694 to Maj. Gen. Lee and OVS Director Mark S. Moses. The monies will be used for the expansion and improvement of the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery (WHVC) in Kailua-Kona, HI. The $2.75 million will provide 100 percent of the funding for the construction of in-ground cremation gravesites, columbaria, a storage facility with a fenced service yard, a road, landscaping, a memorial walk, an assembly area, a committal shelter, restrooms and supporting infrastructure to include utilities, landscaping and irrigation. This also includes design costs and equipment to operate the cemetery.
The Veterans Day program includes a parade of flags, presentation of leis by veterans’ organizations, CH-47 flyover by the Hawaii Army National Guard, and a rifle salute by the Hawaii Air National Guard Honor Guard. OVS Dir. Moses will be the master of ceremonies.
Civilian attendees are asked to wear aloha attire. Military attendees are asked to wear Class B or equivalent attire.
