Hilo, HI-  The Hawaii Army National Guard and USA Rugby partnered to raise nearly $60,000 worth of equipment and uniform kits to eight Hawaii Youth Rugby teams. During the opening Ceremony on Friday at 2 p.m. at Keeau High School, the Hawaii Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Division will be distributing the rugby gear to all of the participating clubs as a donation to Hawaii Youth Rugby. The eight teams include five from Oahu: Kahuku All Red, Waipahu Warriors, Kalakaua Raiders, Aliamanu Rams, Laie Parkside Spartans; one from Maui: Mana O Maui: and two from Hawaii Island: Hilo Reign and the Waimea Rugby Club.

The Kit Program was originally intended for collegiate rugby teams across America, but since there are no college programs in Hawaii, it was decided to extend this program down to the Youth Rugby level. This is a unique program, as Hawaii will have the only youth teams in the country to receive this uniform and equipment kit award this year. The mission of this program is to provide teams with the necessary apparel and equipment to enjoy a higher level of rugby and greater commitment to growing the sport within the state, while creating relationships between these players and the Hawaii Army National Guard. This program hopes to communicate and instill the discipline and values of the Army National Guard in these impressionable youths, and give them an avenue to grow and achieve both on and off the field.
