VICE DIRECTOR OF STATE CIVIL DEFENSE STEPS DOWN

HONOLULU, HAWAII- After having served over ten years as Vice-Director of State Civil Defense (SCD), Ed Teixeira resigned from his position today.

VICE DIRECTOR OF STATE CIVIL DEFENSE STEPS DOWN

 

 

HONOLULU, HAWAII- After having served over ten years as Vice-Director of State Civil Defense (SCD), Ed Teixeira resigned from his position today. The Vice-Director is responsible for coordinating day-to-day State emergency management and homeland security activities.  The State Adjutant General serves as the Director of State Civil Defense.

 

“Ed Teixeira has been a dedicated, hardworking Vice-Director and the State of Hawaii is far better prepared to meet the challenges of any natural disaster thanks to his efforts,” said Maj. Gen. Darryll D.M. Wong, State Adjutant General. “We wish him well as he begins a new chapter of his life.” 

 

Teixeira began his service with SCD in 1996 as a disaster assistance planner.  He served as the interim Vice Director of SCD beginning October 1, 1999 and led the division through the Y2K rollover conversion. He was formally appointed to this position on January 10, 2000 which included overseeing the day-to-day operations at the Birkhimer Emergency Operating Center inside Diamond Head crater.  Teixeira helped coordinate efforts that included the earthquake of 2006 and most recently the tsunami of March 2011.   

 

Teixeira’s resignation is effective immediately. The State of Hawaii, Department of Defense will be conducting a search for a replacement.  In the meantime, Victor Gustafson, will be serving as interim SCD Vice-Director.  Gustafson is the current Plans and Operations Branch Chief at SCD. 

 

“With Vic as interim Vice-Director, there will be a smooth transition in our state emergency management and homeland security activities,” stated Maj. Gen. Wong.  Gustafson has been in his current position for more than six years and had been with SCD since 1996. 

 

The mission of the SCD is to prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies caused by natural or man-made hazards.  This important mission is implemented through hazard mitigation, disaster preparedness, homeland security, emergency response, and through disaster recovery programs.
