Coordinated Public Transit - Human Service Transportation Plan

State of Hawaii Coordinated Public Transit
- Human Services Transportation Plan

What is it?

The Hawaii Coordinated Public Transit-Human Services Transportation Plan brings together public transit, social service, non-profit agencies, transportation providers, and other community organizations to improve mobility for people with disabilities, older adults, and individuals who are economically disadvantage in the counties of Kauai, Maui and Hawaii. The project will identify transportation needs, transportation resources, and opportunities for developing partnerships to address transportation gaps.

Why coordinate?

Developing partnerships across agencies to improve transportation can be difficult to do, but can also reap great rewards. Coordinated transportation projects across the nation have led to service improvements and efficiencies, increased access to community services and activities, and more funding for accessible transportation.

Another good reason to coordinate is that the federal government requires it.  Before distributing specific grant funds, the Federal Transit Administration requires communities to have a Coordinated Public Transit-Human Services Transportation Plan.

Who's involved?

The Plan will be developed county by county, with state level strategies developed to support county needs. The planning process will solicit feedback from transportation providers, human services organizations and the people they serve. The Coordinated Public Transit – Human Service Transportation Plan will be incorporated into the overall State of Hawaii Transportation Plan. The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation has contracted with FLT Consulting, Inc., Innovative Paradigms and Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates to facilitate this work.
