New airport parking garage reaches completion
February 17, 2009 -- Governor Linda Lingle, officials from the state Department of Transportation (DOT), Senator Kalani English, Representative Lynn Finnegan, and key members from the airline industry joined together today to dedicate the new parking structure at Honolulu International Airport.
The new parking structure is located between the interisland and overseas terminals. The $39.2 million project broke ground last September and increases the number of parking stalls at Honolulu International Airport from 4,500 to approximately 6,300.
The first seven floors of the parking garage opened today and the eighth floor is scheduled to open in March.
The new eight-story parking garage is connected to the interisland terminal garage on the top level by a bridge that will carry two lanes of traffic. There is a moving sidewalk on the lower level for pedestrians.
“This project was one of Governor Linda Lingle’s key initiatives. We’d like to thank her for her tireless efforts in making this project a reality,” says state airports deputy director Brian Sekiguchi.
The parking garage is part of the statewide $2.3 billion, multi-year plan to modernize all the islands’ airports.
“This marks one of the first of more infrastructures to be added to Honolulu International Airport, as part of the state’s Modernization Program,” says Governor Linda Lingle. “It is important that we continue to provide the necessary infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the traveling public and Hawaii’s airport system, making our airports the best they can be,” she adds.
