Instructor Criminal Background Check
Any person who teaches driver education or seeks certification as a driver education instructor is required to have both a Hawaii and a FBI Criminal History Record Check.
All applicants are required to undergo fingerprinting as part of their criminal history record check. Applicants must pay all charges for fingerprinting and for the criminal history record check.
To get the background check, Oahu applicants should go to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center (HCJDC), located at 465 S. King Street, Room 101, Honolulu, (808) 587-3100, or to the main police department if residing on the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai or Lanai.
Applicants may use on-line computers at the HCJDC or police departments to print out their own Hawaii criminal background check. They may also complete the application for a FBI Criminal History Record Check and be fingerprinted at these locations.
The FBI Criminal History check takes approximately six weeks to be completed. Results are sent directly to the Department of Transportation.
Fees must be paid in cash or by money order. Fees are set by the HCJDC and FBI and are subject to change. Current fees are $10 for a Hawaii criminal background check, $15 for fingerprinting and $24 for a FBI criminal history check.
