HONOLULU—The state Department of
Transportation advises O‘ahu motorists that traffic on the H-1 Freeway between
Kunia and Makakilo will be diverted onto a bypass route beginning June 21,
2008. This bypass will allow for the
continued construction of the North-South
Road.
Traffic in both directions will be diverted onto newly-constructed ramps at the
future site of the North-South Road Interchange (see attached image). Honolulu-bound traffic will be diverted to
the eastbound bypass beginning Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. Wai‘anae-bound traffic will be redirected to
the westbound bypass beginning Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.
The temporary bypass is necessary, as a section of the H-1 Freeway will be
closed for construction. Traffic will be
diverted around the site, where the North-South
Road overpass is being constructed. Each 4,500-foot bypass section will be three-lanes
wide and the speed limit will be lowered to 50-miles per hour as a safety
precaution.
Once construction of the overpass is completed, the bypass ramps will be integrated into the final interchange ramp design to minimize the overall cost and construction needed.
The North-South Road project constructs
a new six-lane highway connecting Kapolei
Parkway, Farrington
Highway, and the H-1 Freeway. The $143 million project consists of three
construction phases.
Phase 1A of the project constructed a 0.8-mile segment between Farrington Highway
and Kapolei Parkway
and was completed in November 2007.
Phase 1B construction is currently in-progress and will connect the Phase 1A
segment to Farrington Highway
and Kapolei Parkway.
The upcoming H-1 Freeway bypass route is part of Phase 1C, which will construct
a new diamond interchange at the H-1 Freeway and the connection to Farrington Highway. Construction
for Phase 1C is anticipated to be complete in September 2009.
Motorists are advised to use caution when entering and exiting the bypass and
driving through the work area.
