Kalanianaole Highway Improvements Project Begins Monday In Hawaii Kai

06/03/10 - Construction will begin on the Kalanianaole Highway Improvements Project in the vicinity of Keahole Street to Hawaii Kai Drive on Monday, 6/7. The project will extend the third westbound lane of Kalanianaole Highway from Hawaii Kai Drive eastward to Keahole Street, improving traffic flow and road safety.

HONOLULU – The state Department of Transportation (DOT), Highways Division, will begin construction on the Kalanianaole Highway Improvements Project in the vicinity of Keahole Street to Hawaii Kai Drive next Monday, June 7.

The project will extend the third westbound lane of Kalanianaole Highway from Hawaii Kai Drive eastward to Keahole Street (see illustration below).  The extended lane will provide increased traffic movement from the busy Keahole Street intersection and a sheltered merge for Keahole Street motorists entering Kalanianaole Highway.

“The extension of this third lane will help Keahole Street traffic to merge more safely onto Kalanianaole Highway and improve overall circulation and safety in the area,” said Brennon Morioka, state DOT Director.  “It will help to decrease the back-up occurring near the Hawaii Kai Towne Center especially on busy weekends, allowing people to spend less time sitting in their cars stuck in traffic.”

Construction will be performed by contractor Henry’s Equipment Rental & Sales, Inc. at an approximate cost of $1.84 million.  Federal funding will cover eighty-percent of this total with state funds providing the remaining twenty-percent.  Project completion is anticipated in March 2011.

Lane closures and detours can be expected along Kalanianaole Highway, Hawaii Kai Drive and Keahole Street during construction.  Motorists are asked to drive with caution through the construction areas, obey all traffic signs and to expect possible traffic delays.  Lane closure information will be posted on the DOT website at Hawaii.gov/dot/highways/roadwork/oahu.
