[1] In accordance with the Constitution of the State of Hawaii, all State Senate terms shall expire in the election following reapportionment of districts. Terms of those elected will be staggered for two or four year terms to be filled, respectively, in the two subsequent elections.

[2] Senator Solomon was appointed by Governor Abercrombie on December 21, 2010 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Senator Dwight Takamine, who was nominated as Director of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

[3] Senator Kahele was appointed by Governor Abercrombie on January 11, 2011 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Senator Russell Kokubun, who was nominated as Director of the Department of Agriculture.

[4] Pursuant to the Hawaii State Constitution, Article IV, Section 7 and 8, terms of all State Senators end at the general election at which the reapportionment plan is effective.  The reapportionment commission determines which Senate districts will have two-year terms and which will have four-year terms for staggered terms.

[5] Senator Shimabukuro was appointed by Governor Abercrombie on December 21, 2010 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Senator Colleen Hanabusa, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

[6] Representative Kawakami was appointed by Governor Abercrombie on April 4, 2011 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Representative Hermina Morita, who was appointed to the Public Utilities Commission.

[7] Representative Giugni was appointed by Governor Abercrombie on February 16, 2012 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Representative Tom Okamura.

[8] Representative Jordan was appointed by Governor Abercrombie on January 20, 2011 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Representative Maile S.L. Shimabukuro, who was appointed to the State Senate District 21.

[9] The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) Special Election is held in conjunction with the General Election.

[10] Councilmember Berg was elected in a Special Vacancy Election held on December 29, 2010 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Councilmember Todd Apo.

[11] Councilmember Anderson was elected in a Special Vacancy Election held on April 23, 2009 to fill a vacancy created upon the death of Councilmember Barbara Marshall.

[12] Councilmember Kobayashi was elected in a Special Vacancy Election held on August 7, 2009 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Councilmember Duke Bainum.

[13] Hawaii Prosecutor Iboshi became prosecutor on April 1, 2011 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Hawaii Prosecutor Jay Kimura.

[14] Councilmember Kualii was selected by the Kauai County Council on April 11, 2011 to fill a vacancy created upon the resignation of Councilmember Derek Kawakami, who was appointed to the State House District 14.
