HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $321,499 for improvements to public health facilities on the Big Island and Maui overseen by the Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation.
These projects are in addition to the $1.8 billion public infrastructure construction plan unveiled by Governor Lingle in December 2008 to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
“Our public hospitals provide critical services to the people of Hawai‘i, particularly on the neighbor islands,” said Governor Lingle. “Though the fiscal environment we face requires tough decisions, we are moving forward with improvements to these facilities where possible.”
Ka‘ū Hospital – $136,200 – Big Island
These funds will be used to complete the design and construction of air-conditioning upgrades at the hospital. The total project cost is $670,782, which includes previous allotments of $130,655 for design, $360,582 for construction and $43,345 for equipment. Construction is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in December 2009.
Hilo Medical Center – $84,801 – Big Island
These funds will finance design for the replacement of the hospital’s elevator and dumbwaiter. The total project cost is estimated to be $5,070,199. Governor Lingle previously released $60,000 for project planning. Design is scheduled to begin this month and be completed in October 2009. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in January 2010 and be completed in October 2010.
Kula Hospital – $100,498 – Maui
These construction funds will be used to complete upgrades to the hospital’s fire sprinkler system. The total project cost is $533,498, which includes previous allotments of $43,000 for design and $390,000 for construction. Construction is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in June 2009.
