Broadband Communications
A portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is dedicated to helping states expand broadband services. Broadband is the communications infrastructure necessary for a 21st-century information-based economy, and includes not only high-speed internet, but voice, video and data transmitted over various media, including co-axial cable, fiber, wireless and satellite. Broadband communications continues to be a key focus of the Lingle-Aiona Administration, which recently submitted proposed legislation to improve broadband service, penetration, quality and pricing in collaboration with the Legislature and Hawai‘i’s tech community. This shared focus on increasing broadband access and capabilities will help Hawai‘i maximize federal stimulus funds in this area. Read the news release: Governor Lingle Outlines Plan to Enhance Hawai`i's Broadband Communications Infrastructure Learn more about HB984 and SB1680, which would create the Hawai`i Communications Commission and task it with investigating, promoting, and ensuring the growth and development of broadband infrastructure within the state. Both bills are currently moving through the legislature as a component of the majority legislative package.
