April 1, 2005 - Affordable housing

Aloha.

Hawai`i’s robust economy is providing more opportunities for families to find their dream home.  However, for too many of our residents, basic affordable housing is out of reach.

My Administration has proposed a comprehensive action plan to address the lack of affordable housing.

A task force of over 100 individuals, service organizations, and housing specialists concluded that utilizing parcels of state land to build housing, providing financial incentives, streamlining permitting, and providing new funding to repair existing public housing were the key components of a successful affordable housing program.

Everyone agrees on these key aspects, and therefore the time for action is now.

If no action is taken this legislative session to adopt our affordable housing plan, we will have lost a valuable opportunity, and Hawai`i families will face a crisis.

Please ask your legislator to support the affordable housing plan of 2005.

Mahalo. This is Governor Linda Lingle.
