April 18, 2005 - Superferry

Aloha.

Hawai`i has an ideal opportunity to expand our interisland travel options and reduce prices.

The Superferry will make it easier to visit family and friends on neighbor islands, or enjoy a weekend getaway.

Families will be able to drive their cars onto a high-speed catamaran on one island and drive off a few hours later on another.

Farmers could economically ship fresh produce between the islands, which ultimately will save us all money at the grocery store.

And a high school sports or debate team could board the ferry along with their bus in the morning and compete that afternoon on a different island.

My Administration has proposed $40 million to upgrade our harbors and piers to accommodate the Superferry and other ocean vessels.  The funds would be reimbursed to the state by ferry revenues and docking fees.

It’s so obvious…our residents, visitors and businesses will be well-served by the Superferry.

Please ask the Legislature to support the Superferry.

Mahalo.  This is Governor Linda Lingle.
